Come and join the Shire of Caer Adamant at our monthly A&S Social.
Bring a project, bring a friend, and visit with friends and new comers! No fee, no garb required, site is food-friendly if you want to bring your dinner. The site is ADA accessible.
Hello Caer Adamant! Our friends at Greenbank Mills and Philips Farm (GBM) are seeking volunteers to help with their TIMELESS TRADES program series.
If you’re willing to develop a class, or classes, they want to hear from you! GBM would provide a kit for participants to start and you would conduct the class virtually (for now). This is one way a SCAdian could stay connected with and share their hobby during these socially distanced times.
The options for topics is broad! While SCA’s time period is quite a while before GBM’s period of interpretation (1790-1830), there are trades which continue today, such as farming, food preservation, leather and metal work, shepherding, spinning/weaving/textiles, wax craft, woodworking and more (crafts immigrant communities may have brought with them).
By way of example, this fall, they will be hosting a “Cross Stitch 101” series which will begin with courses that go back to the basics (various tools and basic stitches), along with the history of the craft and exhibits from their collection. Later courses will provide opportunities for participants to “level up”. Neat, right?!
If interested in volunteering for the Timeless Trades program, please contact Stacie Maheurin, Executive Director of GBM. Stacie will walk you through things like how to introduce the program, how long it should be, what it should look like, format and those kinds of things. Thank you!

WHEN Tuesday, January 7, 2020 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
WHERE The home of Baroness Hedewigis, 1604 Old Wilmington Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.
BASIC WEAVE STRUCTURES Mistress Hedewigis will be teaching basic weave structures. Weave structure is the design by which fabric is produced. The great variety of weaves found in the textiles of today are modifications of a few fundamental weaves invented in the earliest times. Basic weaves include plain, twill, and satin.
DROP SPINNING Dona Engracia will be teaching drop spinning. The drop spindle is one of the oldest methods for spinning fibers into yarn or thread.
A spindle is a straight spike usually made from wood used for spinning, twisting fibers such as wool, flax, hemp, cotton into yarn. It is often weighted at either the bottom, middle, or top, commonly by a disc or spherical object called a whorl (spindle whorls have been found in archaeological digs around the world), however many spindles exist that are not weighted by a whorl, but by thickening their shape towards the bottom.

VIKING WHIPCORD Baroness Hedewigis will teach us how to make Viking Whipcord (with the Bobbins we made last month… or bring your own bobbins).
Viking whipcording is fun, fast, and easy way of braiding to make big, strong and decorative cords. The Vikings use heavy bobbins to control the ends of the thread, which are attached overhead firmly; and the bobbins are then manipulated to form the cord while the weight of the bobbins controls the threads and keeps tension.
ILLUMINATED BOOKMARKS Lady Mari will be teach us how to illuminate a bookmark. An illuminated manuscript is a manuscript in which the text is supplemented with decoration including initials, borders, marginalia, and miniature illustrations. Rather than an entire manuscript, we’ll illuminate a smaller piece, a bookmark!
Hope to see you all there!

QUEEN’S GOWN We have been given the opportunity to create an outfit for the Queen to wear at Queen’s Bardic Championship on February 22. Let’s showcase all the amazing work people in the Shire do and make the project a collaborative effort (a bit of inspiration shown here).
I would like to try to get everyone hands on it no matter how new
they are.
If your art is something that you might not immediately associate
with making a dress, like glass making, metal work, wood carving, or scribal… I
have ideas on ways to incorporate these types of things into the overall
project.

BEGINNING LUCET Lady Kateline Hicch will teach beginning lucet.
A lucet is a horn shaped, handheld tool, often made of wood, which is believed to date back to the Viking and Medieval periods. Lucets were in common use throughout Europe until the 16th century. A cord made by lucet is exceptionally strong and slightly springy. It can be useful in period garb, for use as the lacing of a bodice, for example.
Lady Kateline
will have two types of lucets with her for class as well as some embroidery
thread and yarn to use while learning.
If you would like to bring your own lucet and supplies, please do. There
is no charge for this class; however, a lucet can be purchased for $5.

A few of the awesome books made during A&S Bookbinding workshop!
BOOKLET WORKSHOP All are welcome! Come learn basic bookbinding skills from Baroness Mari and make yourself a small booklet that you can use for class notes while you’re at Pennsic War (or any other event where you take classes).
Want to make a book at home? Download the tutorial on making a soft-covered Coptic Book (a handout from a class taught during a past Pennsic War).
1) Learn the basics using a less expensive paper and cardboard booklet ($2 material fee), or
2) Make a small leather book ($12 material fee). This book takes a bit of time and so your book may not be complete before the end of the workshop.
Note on Tools: Neither of the material fees include the tools you need make a book. While we’ll have a few tools to share, you might want to look into purchasing your own tools. We suggest something like this 15 Piece Bookbinding Starter Tools Kit available from Amazon and other suppliers.

TUNICS & TROUSERS Join us for a simple tunic and trouser making workshop for “new to sewing” people. BTW ladies, if you make a tunic longer you have a quick and easy dress.
WHAT TO BRING At least 3 yards of pre-washed fabric for a tunic and the same for a pair of pants (add 1 more yard for each, if you are tall).
PLUS, we’ll talk about ways to make them more interesting, like
block printing, trim and more. These simple
treatments can really take your Tunics and Trousers up a notch and don’t cost much
of anything at all.
