Nov. 5 A&S Viking Whipcord Bobbins

Greetings!  Join us for this monthly, informal gathering where we work on A & S projects together.  Come with your own project or learn something new!  Dress is modern.

WHEN
Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

WHERE
The home of Baroness Hedewigis, 1604 Old Wilmington Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.

WHIPCORD BOBBINS
Baroness Hedewigis will teach us how to make Viking Whipcord Bobbins.

Viking whipcording (or interlocking, slyngyng, or even spoon tossing) is fun, fast, and easy way of braiding cords to make big, strong and more decorative cords.  The Vikings use heavy bobbins to control the ends of the thread. The beginning of the cord is attached overhead firmly and the bobbins are manipulated to form the cord while the weight of the bobbins controls the threads and keeps tension.

COST
There is a cost for this class of around $12. If you don’t wish to take part in the class you are welcome to bring a project of your own to work on while you’re there.

EVERY MONTH
Baroness Hedewigis hosts an A&S Night on the first Tuesday of every month starting at 7:00 pm.  Contact Baroness Hedewigis 302-239-9787 if you have trouble getting to her home, which is a modified red barn.  Carpooling to the site is highly encouraged.

Greetings!  Join us for this monthly, informal gathering where we work on A & S projects together.  Come with your own project or learn something new!  Dress is modern.

WHEN
Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.

A lucet is a horn shaped, handheld tool, often made of wood, which is believed to date back to the Viking and Medieval periods.  Lucets were in common use throughout Europe until the 16th century. A cord made by lucet is exceptionally strong and slightly springy.  It can be useful in period garb, for use as the lacing of a bodice, for example.

Lady Kateline will have two types of lucets with her for class as well as some embroidery thread and yarn to use while learning.  If you would like to bring your own lucet and supplies, please do. There is no charge for this class; however, a lucet can be purchased for $5.

Come, all ye armored fighters, show your skills at arms and fending in the Ninth Annual Tournament of the Fallen Stag in the Shire of Caer Adamant on Sunday, September 29th in Newark, Delaware.  Gather your weapons and arrive prepared to fight in a Bear Pit style, timed, 90-minute points tournament for official bragging rights!  The tournament will be divided into two 45-minute periods with a short break in between.

Thrown Weapons Practice!

Greetings!  Honorable Lord Mikael Melrakki McCue is going to begin holding thrown weapons practice on certain Sunday mornings starting Sept. 22!

Thrown weapons practices are open to anyone ages 5 and up.  Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  Instruction may be given.

SCHEDULE
Honorable Lord Mikael will be hosting these from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm on the Sundays the Barony of Buckland Cross is not holding practice:

  • September 22, 29
  • October 6, 20
  • November 3, 17
  • After will depend on weather and attendance.

WHERE
The home of Honorable Lord Mikael, 320 North Avenue, Secane PA 19018.  (However, depending on the app being used, the address may be shown in Upper Darby, Clifton Heights, Morton or Springfield.  Also, traveling down North Avenue from Baltimore Pike, the house numbers suddenly drop from the 1000s to the 300s.)  There is plenty of free, on-site parking behind the house, just follow the driveway around.

FOOTWEAR
Although not required, closed toe shoes are strongly recommended.

LOANER EQUIPMENT
Plenty of loaner equipment will be available.  Note:  If you borrow axes with wooden handles and stick an axe in the target, do not throw any more weapons until the stuck axe has been removed.  If you do and irreparably damage a handle, you will be asked to pay for a new handle.  (There is no charge for a broken handle on a throw at an empty target.  If that happens it’s usually the handles fault.)  Because hitting one axe with another is an avoidable situation that is when you will be asked to provide compensation.  Of course, what you do with your own equipment is your decision.

UPDATES & CANCELLATIONS
As life and weather are always happening, be sure to check our Calendar and / or Facebook page for activity updates (for purpose, date, time or location changes) and cancellations.
